"Here I Go Again" is a song past British rock ring Whitesnake. Originally released on their 1982 album, Saints & Sinners, the power ballad was re-recorded for their 1987 self-titled album. The vocal was re-recorded again the same year in a new "radio-mix" version, which was released every bit a single and hitting number ane on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart on 10 October 1987, and number nine on the UK Singles Chart on 28 Nov 1987. The 1987 version also hitting number one on the Canadian Singles Chart on 24 October 1987.

In 2003, Q magazine ranked it 962nd on their list of 1001 "Best Songs Ever".[7] In 2006, the 1987 version was ranked number 17 on VH1'south 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s.[8] In 2012 Reader'south Poll of Rolling Rock information technology ranked as 9th amidst Top 10 "The Best Hair Metal Songs of All Time".[2] In 2017, The Daily Telegraph included it among Top 21 best power ballads.[9]

Background and writing [edit]

The song was written by the lead singer, David Coverdale, and old Whitesnake guitarist, Bernie Marsden. The most notable difference between the original and re-recorded versions are a slight change in the bluesy lyrics and pace.[10] The re-recording of the vocal in 1987 was advised by tape labels bosses Al Coury and David Geffen every bit a negotiation deal with Coverdale to re-record "Crying in the Rain" for the band's self-titled album Whitesnake released in 1987.[eleven] [12] [13]

The chorus of the original version features the lines:

And here I get once more on my own
Goin' down the only road I've ever known
Like a hobo I was built-in to walk alone

In an interview, Coverdale explained that initially the lyrics had "drifter" but as that was already used in different songs he chose instead "hobo", however the latter was changed again to "drifter" in the re-recorded '87 version, reportedly to ensure that information technology would non be misheard as "homo".[ten] [12]

The song was used in the climax of romantic comedy film Man Up (2015).[10]

The song is composed in the key of Yard major and a tempo of 91 BPM.[14]

Music video [edit]

The '82 music video features the band performing the song onstage.[12] The music video for the '87 re-recorded version was directed past Marty Callner.[xv] The video includes, besides the ring's stage performance, appearances by model Julie E. "Tawny" Kitaen, who was married to Whitesnake'southward David Coverdale from 1989 to 1991.[ii] [12] Her notable sexual activity-appeal was immediately recognized, having memorable unchoreographed scenes dressed "in a white negligee, writhing and cartwheeling across the hoods of two Jaguars XJ" which belonged to Coverdale (white) and Callner (black).[fifteen] [16] [17] Coverdale recalls that he fifty-fifty brought choreographer Paula Abdul to the gear up to show some moves to Coverdale'south girlfriend Tawny, but just to positively exclaim that she couldn't "prove her anything".[eighteen] [19] [twenty] Coverdale'south iconic white Jaguar once over again appeared in the music video for unmarried "Shut Up & Kiss Me" from their 2019 studio album Flesh & Blood.[eighteen] [21]

Chart performance [edit]

This song is notable for being the only Whitesnake song to get airplay on adult contemporary stations despite the fact "Is This Dearest" reached number 38 there and this song did not chart at all on the Air conditioning charts.[26]

  • A dance cover version by Frash was a minor hit in the UK in 1995, reaching number 69.[48]
  • In 2004, a trip the light fantastic toe/pop version of "Hither I Go Once again" was recorded by Shine dancer and singer Mandaryna.[49] Released as the debut single from her debut album Mandaryna.com, the song became a hit in Poland. Information technology was later remixed past Axel Konrad of Groove Coverage for the single release in German speaking countries.
